ERC-20 Token Development on Ethereum: Complete Guide for 2026
What Is an ERC-20 Token?
ERC-20 is the standard interface for fungible tokens on Ethereum. Every major token you have heard of — USDT, LINK, UNI — follows this standard. It defines six mandatory functions (totalSupply, balanceOf, transfer, transferFrom, approve, allowance) that every ERC-20 contract must implement, ensuring all wallets and exchanges can interact with your token without custom integration.
Planning Your Token
Before writing code, decide:
- Total supply — fixed at mint or mintable over time?
- Decimals — 18 is standard, matches ETH precision
- Ownership — who controls minting, pausing, and blacklisting?
- Tokenomics — team allocation, presale, liquidity pool, vesting schedule
Setting Up with OpenZeppelin
Never write ERC-20 logic from scratch. OpenZeppelin's audited library has handled every edge case. Install it in your Hardhat project: npm install @openzeppelin/contracts
Your contract then imports ERC20, Ownable, and optionally ERC20Burnable or ERC20Pausable depending on your requirements.
Writing the Contract
A production ERC-20 contract extends OpenZeppelin's ERC20 and Ownable. In the constructor, pass the token name and symbol to the parent, then mint the total supply to the deployer address. Add a mint function restricted to the owner if you need inflationary supply later.
Adding Vesting
Team and investor allocations should never be immediately transferable. Use OpenZeppelin's VestingWallet or write a custom vesting contract that locks tokens until a cliff date, then releases them linearly over a vesting period. This protects price from early dumping.
Testing Your Token
Write Hardhat tests that cover: initial supply allocation, transfer between accounts, approval and transferFrom flow, owner-only mint, and pause functionality if included. Run the full suite before any deployment.
Deploying to Mainnet
- Deploy to Sepolia testnet first and stress-test with real wallets
- Verify the contract source code on Etherscan — this builds trust with buyers
- Use a hardware wallet or Gnosis Safe multisig as the owner — never a hot wallet
- Lock liquidity on Uniswap via Unicrypt or Team Finance immediately after launch
- Renounce ownership if the token is fully decentralised — this prevents rug accusations
Adding Liquidity on Uniswap
After deployment, pair your token with ETH or USDC on Uniswap v3. The initial liquidity ratio sets the launch price. Add enough ETH to absorb early sell pressure without catastrophic slippage. Announce the Uniswap pool address publicly so buyers can verify they are trading the correct contract.
Post-Launch Checklist
- Submit to CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap for listing
- Add token metadata to MetaMask Token List
- Set up a Dexscreener page with logo and social links
- Monitor the contract on Etherscan alerts for unusual transfers
